Crown Thinning reduces the overall density of foliage and includes the removal of crossing, weak and dead branches.
Crown thinning is the process of removing limbs and epicormic (sucker) growth throughout the crown to reduce the overall density of foliage and includes the removal of crossing, weak and dead branches. The thinning process does not affect the overall shape or size of the crown.
The main uses of tree crown thinning are:
- To increase the amount of light penetrating to the ground.
- To reduce the potential for damage in adverse weather conditions.
In this method, our team of highly trained and qualified tree surgeons will remove crossing and rubbing branches, letting more light through. Dead or decaying branches are also removed. Then the tree is pruned to reduce the crown density whilst still maintaining its natural shape.
Crown thinning is often a good compromise where light is an issue and the tree has been considered for removal. The technique reduces the ‘sail’ effect of the tree, reducing it’s wind resistance which is particularly important where a tree has a weak branch system thereby reducing the weight of the crown and the removal of particularly heavy or lateral limbs that could damage other limbs if they failed, prolonging the life of the tree. Our tree surgeons will also advise you on any other branches that should be removed to maintain the structural integrity of the tree and prolong its life. Because the number of cuts is significantly lower than in a Crown Reduction it puts less stress on the tree, the risk of initiating decay is eased, and any subsequent regrowth is lessened.
Logs and woodchip created through this process can either be retained for your own use or removed from site for recycling.
