Retaining Wall built from Large Wooden Sleepers, Aboyne, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire

Our landscaping team used treated softwood railway sleepers to create a retaining wall and raised planting bed at a garden in Aboyne, Royal Deeside. The project combined support for a steep bank with a planted boundary beside a footpath.

The brief: a tidier boundary and more privacy

The rear garden boundary ran alongside a footpath and was covered with unwanted wild shrubs. The owners wanted the shrubs cleared and a better separation between the path and their garden. The steep bank also needed to be retained.

The work: a sleeper retaining wall and mixed hedge

We constructed a timber raised bed using treated softwood railway sleepers to retain the bank. Planting a mixed hedge along its length provided the garden boundary with a living screen for privacy from the footpath.

The result: retaining and planting in one solution

The sleeper structure gave the sloping boundary a defined edge and a space for hedge planting. It brought the retaining work and the owners’ need for privacy together in a single garden feature.
